NEWS

School is Back in Session!

The first day of school is Tuesday, September 2nd.  The bell schedule is the same as last year; the first bell rings at 8:20am for student line up.  If you haven’t purchased your school supplies yet, supply lists can be found on the Supply List page of the website.

Meet and Greet on September 2nd

We will be hosting our 3rd Annual Meet and Greet just outside of the playground on Tuesday, September 2nd.  After the kids head into school, stop by for a cup of coffee and a doughnut.  Get to meet some of the other parents and learn about how you can get involved in your child’s school!

Friends Meeting Schedule

Our first meeting will be on Friday, September 5th at 8:30am in the auditorium.  We will continue to have meetings every other week, and will alternate between Friday mornings and Thursday evenings.

Fundraising Activities

Dolphin Dollars

This is an ongoing, monthly program.  Gift cards for a variety of vendors can be purchased each month, and are worth the full value of the purchase price.  For example, a $25 Jewel gift card is worth $25 in groceries at Jewel.  Each gift card purchase results in money earned for The Chicago Academy, ranging from 3% to 15% of the purchase price.  For more information, look for the Dolphin Dollars flyers next to the Parent Board in the main hallway, or contact Diana or Julie.   The first order forms for the school year will be distributed in early September.

Market Day

We will continue with our monthly Market Day grocery program.  In addition, Market Day will also sponsor our annual Fall Fundraiser this year.  Look for lots of new and exciting products.  The Fall Fundraiser will kick off on September 24th and run through October 8th.

Box Tops for Education

Just a reminder to everyone to look for Box Tops on all of your groceries.  Check the packaging for Box Tops for Education before you toss it in the trash.  Each Box Top is worth 10¢ for the school.  They are on many products from snack food to facial tissue , cereal to Huggies, yogurt to rolls of paper towels, not to mention the ZipLoc bags!  We had a great response to the raffles; look for more in the future.  You can also visit www.boxtopsforeducation.com for other ways to earn cash for TCA and sign up to receive monthly newsletters with valuable coupons and recipes your family will love!  Look for a complete list of products next to the Parent Board in the main hallway, or contact Karen Melzer at chicky65@comcast.net.

K-Mart is running a wonderful promotion – if you buy 12 Box Top items, you will receive a certificate at checkout for 100 Box Tops for our school!

Campbell’s Products

Keep clipping those UPC’s from the participating Campbell ’s products you are using each week.  These are for the Campbell ’s Labels for Education Program.  A list of participating products is available next to the parent board in the school’s entrance hallway.  You can also visit www.labelsforeducation.com for more information.  In the Labels for Education Program, the UPC’s are added up as points and exchanged for merchandise from the Labels for Education catalog.  Some examples of available items are art supplies, Phys ed. Equipment, resource materials, math and science products, books, or software.  There are many to choose from based on our point total.  The more UPC’s we turn in, the more products we can choose.  So get clipping!

Football Concessions

We will be running the concession stand at all home football games this year.  Volunteers are needed to help staff the booth each weekend.  If you are available to help, please contact Katie Ordinario.

Activities

Newsletter

Lee Haas manages our Friends of TCA monthly newsletter.  Any items for inclusion can be sent directly to Lee.

Yearbook

Amy Lynch will be heading up the Yearbook Committee for the 2008-09 school year.  Volunteers (including photographers) are needed, and can contact Amy.

Lego First Robotics

We are interested in starting up a Lego Robotics team at TCA.  Please look for an informational meeting to be scheduled very soon!

Travel/Day Care Information Swap

We receive many requests for assistance with either travel arrangements or day-care providers before and after school.  If you are in need of these services, or are in a position to provide such services, please let us know, and we will try to match you up with other parents.

Our Mission

The Friends of Chicago Academy was formed in 2006 by a group of parents interested in assisting the staff and administration of The Chicago Academy Elementary School in their efforts.  Our goals are to raise awareness of our school, provide monetary support through fundraising activities, and to support the teachers, staff and administration in their efforts to create the best learning environment for our children.  The Friends of Chicago Academy is comprised solely of parents of current students and is open to any and all who are interested in joining.  We welcome your ideas, and encourage everyone to give of their time and energy on our various projects throughout the school year.

Officers for the 2008-2009 school year are:

President – Donna Smith

Vice President – Diana DiVito

Treasurer – Lee Haas

Questions?  Comments?

We’d love to hear from you!  If you need any additional information, or have any comments to share, please contact Donna Smith or Diana DiVito.  We hope to see you at a meeting or event soon!!
