STUDENT SELECTION PROCESS Since 2001, The Chicago Academy has been providing students with a high-quality education and training aspiring teachers for the Chicago Public Schools. The Chicago Academy has two classrooms at each grade level (PreK through 8th) with standard CPS class sizes. A majority of our student enrollment comes from the immediate local community. Depending on the number of spots open, we first accept siblings of current K-8 students, in the order of those residing in closest proximity to the school. Next, we open up admissions to applicants whose families reside closest to the school. To do so, we use computer software to determine the distance from an applicant’s residence to Chicago Academy, to the tenths of a mile. Students whose families reside closest are given priority. We are not a traditional CPS neighborhood school. Since there are no attendance boundaries, families may apply on a voluntary basis. We also do not provide busing for students at our school. Families are notified of their application status by U.S. mail, usually by the end of June. Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) must submit their IEPs and have their placements approved by the Office of Specialized Services. Siblings of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) students must apply through the NCLB Choice Program of the Chicago Public Schools, due to transportation issues. Applications for the 2013-2014 school year will be accepted beginning Tuesday, October 9, 2012 through Friday, January 25, 2013. Applications are not organized on a first-come, first-served basis. Completed applications submitted by the deadline are placed on a waiting list, ordered by siblings first and then proximity, as described above. No late applications will be accepted. Families will be notified of their application status by U.S. mail by the end of June. Applications must be submitted in person. No mailed or faxed copies will be accepted. |
